Deployment Methods Enabled by Small Cells

Centralized RAN

Leveraging fiber for front haul capacity, mobile network operators (MNO) can centralize multiple baseband units in a single location at a cell site or a centralized location in generally dense environments. Multiple small cells are connected to streetlights or utility poles via fiber to the central location.

Cloud RAN

Network functions are virtualized in the cloud, NFV. Thus, centralized baseband units can use commercial off-the-shelf servers to handle routine processing, saving costs on hardware while increasing capacity and simplifying network processing.
